Mental Illness is the base for mental health disorders that affects your emotions, thoughts, mood communication, knowledge, spirit, behavior, and self-esteem.

Many people don’t talk about their mental illness openly. But it is nothing to be ashamed of. Mental Illness is a medical condition, just like other diseases such as diabetes, which is treatable. It does not discriminate among age, gender, social status, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, background, or other aspects of cultural individuality. And it can occur at any age, as per the research studies three-fourths of all mental illness begins by age 24.

Over the years, men with mental health disorders are less likely to have received mental health treatment than women. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the death rate of men by suicide is more than women.

So, the discussion around Mental Illness has only increased. Men also go through this as much as women deal with Mental Illnesses. It’s high time to start a conversation about Mental Illness openly.

The heartbreaking news of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput committing suicide has not only traumatized the entire nation but has also highlighted the discussion about mental health across the globe, mainly among men.

Here is a list of 5 male stars that suffered from depression, anxiety disorders and ended up taking their own lives.   

But why male stars only?

It has been witnessed many-a-times; men generally don’t speak up openly about their mental health due to society’s narrow-mindedness around this subject. That’s why, it’s important to be spoken about these issues, and it’s high time to come forward and speak up about mental health! 

6 Celebrities We Tragically Lost to Mental Illness:

1. Sushant Singh Rajput:

Incredible and one of the most talented Bollywood Actors known for films like Kai Po Che, MS Dhoni: The Untold Story, and Chhichhore committed suicide on 14th June 2020. He was suffering from depression.  It seems like this year 2020 is a tidal wave of tragic news for the Bollywood industry that has lost so many legendary celebrities including Irrfan Khan, Rishi Kapoor, singer-music composer Wajid Khan and 34-year-old actor Sushant Singh Rajput.    

2. Kushal Punjabi:

Famous Indian Television and Bollywood actor, who appeared in movies like Kaal, Lakshya, Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal, also appeared in many television shows; Ssshhhh…Phir Koi Hai, Ishq Mei Marjawan, he also participated in several reality shows including fear factor and Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. He was found hanging in his Mumbai apartment. According to news, the late actor was suffering from depression and committed suicide.

3. Sai Prashanth:

Sai Prashanth was a popular Indian actor who appeared in many Tamil movies and television series. He committed suicide in 2016 at a young age of 30 in Chennai. According to the police, the reason may be because of depression and loneliness.

4. Robin McLaurin Williams:

Late American voice actor, comedian, and singer Robin Williams committed suicide by hanging at his home in Paradise Cay, California in August 2014, at 63.  According to the reports Williams had been suffering from depression and anxiety. 

5. Kurt Donald Cobain:

Kurt Cobain was an American singer-songwriter, and the guitarist of the rock band Nirvana. He committed suicide at an early age of 25 in the year 1994. According to the media reports he had taken a huge overdose of drugs and then shot himself with a 20-gauge shotgun. Kurt Cobain’s life was tragic and difficult as he struggled with several health issues and depression before committing suicide.

6. Guru Dutt:

Vasanth Kumar Shivashankar Padukone popularly known as Guru Dutt was an Indian filmmaker, producer, and actor who was found dead in his rented apartment in Mumbai in the year 1964. The actor was 39. According to the media reports, he mixed alcohol and sleeping pills owing to suffering from mental illness.

 

The common reason for the sad deaths of these stars is mental illness. Their sufferings forced them to take such a drastic step in their life; however, the unmentionable subject around these stories is depression among men, which also has a major role to play in the matter. 

If the society becomes more cooperative with such serious issues than we will be able to discuss these topics openly in public, humankind can aim to reach for the reform of the mental well-being of those who are suffering from such critical issues. 

It is so heartbreaking to see people committing suicide when they are at the lowest points in their lives. We as an individual need to be responsible and come together to find ways and help people who all are suffering from mental illness talk without restraint about their mental health, especially men who find it very difficult to speak up openly, even among their friends.
