Difference Between Communicable and Non-Communicable Diseases

While the words "Communicable Diseases" and "Non-Communicable Diseases" are often used interchangeably to describe illnesses, they actually mean two different diseases.

Communicable and Non-Communicable are the two different types of diseases. A disease is a kind of abnormal condition which directly affects the functioning of our body negatively. It is different than an injury that happens immediately to us because disease starts affecting our body slowly. This article is about both types of diseases which are Communicable and Non-Communicable and how they are different.

Types Of Diseases:

  • Communicable Disease.
  • Non-Communicable Disease.

What are the Communicable Diseases?

Communicable diseases are those which get spread from one person to another or from one animal to another. Communicable diseases can spread via both ways which are direct transmission and indirect transmission. Direct transmission can be done by blood, feces, coming in touch with an infected person, and other body fluids. Whereas food, air, water, and insects are the sources of indirect transmission. Some of the examples of communicable diseases are diarrhea, vomiting, malaria, dysentery, muscle ache, headache, flu, rabies, running nose, itching, fever, cough, and the symptoms of these diseases may vary according to the disease. Bacteria, Protozoa, Fungi, and Viruses are some of the agents of communicable diseases.

What are the Non-Communicable Diseases?

Non-communicable diseases can be defined as those diseases which do not spread from person to person means they are non-contagious. They get caused by medicinal side effects, malnutrition, allergy, changes in lifestyle, changes in the environment, changes in eating habits. They are chronic diseases that progress slowly and remain for a long period. Strokes, diabetes, obesity, blurred vision, blood pressure, frequent urination, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, cancer are some of the examples of non-communicable diseases. We can prevent ourselves by a balanced diet, doing proper exercise, a regular visit to a doctor for a routine check-up, and most importantly do not ignore any symptom of illness given by the body. The treatment of the disease depends upon what type of disease it is.

Bacteria Fungi and viruses are some of the infecting agents of these diseases. There are no infecting agents for these diseases.
Corona Virus (Covid-19), AIDS, Cholera,  Typhoid are some of the examples of communicable diseases. Cancer, Rickets, Allergies, Kwashiorkor, Diabetes, Heart disease, are some of the examples of non-communicable diseases.
These diseases can not get inherited from one generation from another. These diseases can get inherited from one generation from another.
These diseases can be treated by conventional methods. These diseases can be treated by surgical or conservatively.
The type of these diseases is acute which means they developed so quickly. The type of these diseases are chronic which means they can get develop slowly and lasts for a long period.
To protect yourself from these diseases you need to take precautions like, wash your hands properly, wear a mask, stay away from the infected persons. Same as we are following nowadays to protect ourselves from coronavirus. To protect yourself from these diseases you need to go for a regular checkup to a doctor, take a proper diet, exercise on a daily basis, take proper rest, and sleep.

The above article is about the basic difference between communicable and non-communicable diseases. Both diseases are equally dangerous. According to research from WHO the worldwide ratio of the people dying from non-communicable diseases is 60%  and the communicable disease spread mostly in undeveloped countries in comparison to the developed ones.
